Pecans

Pecans are the only tree nut native to North America. Also, the pecan was one of the first commercially grown crops in the United States.  Consumption of the pecan dates back as far as the 1500s, when this tree nut served as a major food source for Native Americans.  Over the years, pecans have been grown by explorers and American colonists eventually resulting in the boom of the pecan industry in the late 1800s.  Today, the U.S. & Mexico produce over 90% of the world’s pecans.
